Guwahati Opens National Handicrafts Week with a Tribute to India’s Craft Legacy

Guwahati: Guwahati’s PWD Convention and Training Centre came alive on Monday as the National Handicrafts Week 2025 was inaugurated with a warm celebration of India’s artistic heritage. The event was opened by noted Guru Shilpa Awardee Mantu Chandra Das, whose presence added a sense of pride and recognition to the region’s artisans.

The week, observed nationwide from 8 to 14 December, honours the indomitable spirit of Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, a visionary freedom fighter who championed India’s traditional crafts at a time when they were at risk of fading away. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of artisans and institutions working to preserve this cultural wealth.

Organized by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), North Eastern Regional Office (NERO), the inaugural programme also featured insights from Thangjam Jayenta Singh, Assistant Director (Handicrafts), who outlined the activities planned for the week.

Visitors can look forward to an engaging lineup that includes hands-on craft demonstrations, awareness programmes, live skill workshops, and an exhibition celebrating the vibrant craftsmanship of the North Eastern states. While the Craft Demonstration-cum-Awareness Programme runs till 10 December, the exhibition will remain open to the public till 14 December 2025, offering a rich window into the world of traditional artisans.
