Guwahati, March 24: With the nomination process concluded for the Assam Assembly elections, the electoral contest in Guwahati has intensified, with 26 candidates from multiple parties and independent backgrounds entering the race across five crucial constituencies, setting the stage for a high-stakes urban battle.
In Jalukbari, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will seek re-election on a BJP ticket, facing Congress nominee Bidisha Neog and Bhumi Adhikar Party candidate Deepika Das, shaping a triangular contest in one of the state’s most prominent constituencies.
The Guwahati Central seat has emerged as one of the most crowded battlegrounds, with BJP candidate Vijay Kumar Gupta up against Assam Jatiya Parishad’s Kunki Chowdhury, Aam Aadmi Party nominee Anurupa Dekaraja, Bhumi Adhikar Party’s Prabin Jyoti Kalita, All India Trinamool Congress candidate Abhijit Majumdar, and All India Forward Bloc’s Bipul Debnath. Independent candidate Achyut Kalita has also joined the race, making it a multi-cornered contest.
In New Guwahati, a five-way fight is expected with BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarmah contesting against Congress candidate Santanu Borah. The Aam Aadmi Party has fielded Aditya Gogoi, while Gana Suraksha Party nominee Chinmoyee Bhuyan and independent candidate Kushal Kumar Sharma add to the competition.
The Dispur constituency is set for a closely watched contest between Congress candidate Mira Borthakur Goswami and BJP’s Pradyut Bordoloi, with AAP nominee Ballav Patra and independents Jayanta Kumar Das and Ayush Kumar Singh further intensifying the race.
In Dimoria, Asom Gana Parishad candidate Dr Bhupen Das will face Congress nominee Kishore Kumar Baruah, alongside independent candidates Nitul Das, Bhaskarjyoti Saikia, Pratibha Das and Kaberi Das, indicating a fragmented contest.
With nominations complete, scrutiny is scheduled for March 24, while March 26 has been set as the last date for withdrawal. Polling for all 126 Assembly seats will be held on April 9, with counting slated for May 4, as announced by the Election Commission of India.
