Guwahati: The Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL) has fast-tracked the implementation of the Intelligent City Surveillance System (ICSS) — a ₹177-crore project aimed at strengthening public safety, improving traffic management, and enhancing crowd control across the city.
The ICSS, jointly operated by GSCL and Assam Police, replaces the earlier Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), which remained incomplete. With advanced analytics and AI-powered monitoring, the new system is expected to revolutionize policing and urban governance by enabling quicker response, aiding investigations, reducing congestion, and deterring crime.
According to Mugdha Jyoti Dev Mahanta, Deputy Managing Director of GSCL, the network will feature 2,000 CCTV cameras, including 1,750 bullet and 250 PTZ cameras. “About 1,000 cameras have already been installed,” he said, adding that the project is on track for completion in the new year.

The ICSS also integrates 20 public announcement systems, 20 emergency call boxes, 10 variable message displays, and environmental sensors to track air quality. A state-of-the-art Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) and a Disaster Recovery Centre at Khanapara are nearing completion.
The surveillance system will cover crime-prone areas, traffic corridors, and key public spaces, extending up to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Powered by AI-driven analytics, the ICSS will detect suspicious activities and issue instant alerts, marking a major leap in making Guwahati a smarter and safer city.
