Guwahati: In a major passenger-focused initiative, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has upgraded the Retiring Rooms and Dormitory facilities at Guwahati Railway Station under the Lumding Division. The revamped facilities were inaugurated in the presence of NFR General Manager Shri Chetan Kumar Shrivastava and other senior officials, highlighting the Railways’ commitment to improving station amenities.
The Retiring Room complex, situated on the first floor of the station building, now features 09 Retiring Rooms—including 07 two-bedded rooms and 02 five-bedded rooms—alongside a 12-bedded dormitory. All units have been converted into fully air-conditioned rooms with upgraded beds and modern interiors, providing passengers with a comfortable, hygienic, and convenient stay during transit.
The modernization is also expected to boost non-fare revenue for NFR. The new arrangement is projected to generate Rs. 1.94 crore over the next five-year contract period, with zero expenditure incurred by the Railways for maintenance, operations, or renovation. This marks a significant improvement over the earlier in-house management system, which involved recurring costs and lower net earnings.

The upgradation, management, and maintenance of the Retiring Rooms and Dormitory have been outsourced to a private service provider through an open tender, ensuring high-quality services at no cost to the Railways. NFR officials emphasized that the initiative reflects the organization’s ongoing focus on passenger-centric infrastructure development, optimal asset utilization, and sustainable revenue growth, in line with Indian Railways’ modernization objectives.
