Kohima, July 19: A 19-year-old tourist from Guwahati was rescued after falling nearly 100 feet from a trekking trail leading to Dzükou Valley in Nagaland’s Viswema area during a coordinated rescue operation involving trained local guides and youth volunteers.
The injured tourist, identified as Hisahetuk Das, reportedly slipped from the footpath below Khiyokesa at around 3 pm on July 18 while trekking towards the popular tourist destination.
Despite heavy rain, steep cliffs and dense dwarf bamboo vegetation, trained members of the Southern Angami Tour Guide Council, assisted by volunteers from the Viswema Youth Organisation and the Z Khel Viswema Youth Organisation, successfully reached the injured trekker and carried him to safety.
The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) commended the coordinated efforts of the rescue teams and acknowledged the leadership of its vice-president and Southern Angami Tour Guide Council chairman, Virato Naleo, in coordinating the emergency operation.
An ambulance from the Community Health Centre (CHC), Viswema, transported the injured tourist for medical care, while emergency personnel from the Naga Hospital Authority, Kohima, provided treatment.
SAYO said the successful rescue demonstrated the preparedness and capability of trained local guides and volunteers to respond to emergencies in difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions.
Following the incident, the organisation appealed to visitors to adhere to safety guidelines while trekking to Dzükou Valley and other tourist destinations. It advised trekkers, especially during the monsoon season and on challenging routes, to engage registered local tour guides to enhance safety and facilitate prompt emergency assistance if needed.
