Hand Grenade Found at ITI Gate in Manipur’s Thoubal District, Safely Defused

Imphal: A hand grenade was discovered at the gate of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Lilong, under Lilong police station in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Friday morning, officials said. This marks the first incident this year in which an explosive device has been planted in a public place in the state.

According to police, the grenade is suspected to have been placed by unknown persons with the intention to kill, injure or intimidate individuals. The device was noticed by local passersby, who promptly informed the police.

Acting on the information, a team from Lilong police station rushed to the spot around 7 am and immediately secured the area to prevent any harm to the public. The movement of people in the vicinity was restricted as a precautionary measure.

Subsequently, a bomb disposal squad of the Manipur Police arrived at the scene. After following standard safety protocols, the team successfully defused the grenade at around 10 am, averting a potential tragedy. No injuries or damage to property were reported.

Police officials said the motive behind placing the grenade is yet to be ascertained, and no individual or organisation has claimed responsibility for the act so far. An investigation has been launched to identify those involved.

A case has been registered at the concerned police station under Sections 109, 351(3) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act. Further investigation is underway.
