Heavy rainfall caused soil erosion along a railway track between Jamira in Assam and Bairabi in Mizoram on the Katakhal–Bairabi line, disrupting train services in the region.
According to the Northeast Frontier Railway, around 50 metres of track was affected by soil erosion following heavy rain on Thursday evening. Railway personnel and materials were immediately deployed to begin repair and restoration work.
Several trains were cancelled, short-terminated or rescheduled following the disruption. The Sairang–Guwahati Express was short-terminated at Bairabi and was being returned to Sairang.
To assist around 900 passengers travelling towards Aizawl from Sairang, railway authorities arranged road transport, deploying 16 buses from Sairang. The Silchar–Bairabi Passenger train was also short-terminated at Jamira, with road transport arranged for passengers travelling towards Bairabi.
The Guwahati–Sairang train was short-terminated at Hailakandi and remained cancelled between Hailakandi and Sairang. Several other services scheduled for September 4 were also cancelled.
The Northeast Frontier Railway arranged drinking water and light refreshments for stranded passengers at Jamira, Bairabi and Sairang stations. Helpdesks were also set up at Guwahati, Lumding, Naharlagun, Badarpur and Sairang to provide updates and assistance.
Railway personnel continued restoration work at the affected site as authorities monitored the situation. Efforts were underway to repair the damaged section and restore normal train services at the earliest.
