Heavy Rain Triggers Fresh Road Closures Across Sikkim, NH-10 Connectivity Hit

Heavy rainfall continued to disrupt road connectivity across Sikkim on Wednesday, with landslides and maintenance work blocking several routes, including fresh obstructions along National Highway-10, the state’s main link with Siliguri.

According to the Sikkim Police Control Room’s Road Situation Report issued on July 9, all roads in Gangtok district remained open. In Pakyong district, however, the Rorathang–Rangpo road was blocked at Chamaray Bhir, while the remaining roads in the district were reported to be clear.

In Mangan district, most roads, including those connecting Mangan with Gangtok via Rakdung-Tintek and Phodong, as well as routes to Chungthang, Lachung, Yumthang and Gurudongmar, remained open. However, the Chungthang–Lachen road continued to remain blocked at Taramchu. Officials said the district was experiencing cloudy weather.

In Namchi district, the Ravangla–Yangang road remained blocked at Gogunay, while the Phongla–Bermiok road was closed at Bedghari. Other roads in the district were open to traffic.

Road connectivity was also affected in Gyalshing district, where the Sopakha–Chiwabhanzang road and the Chongrang–Labdang road remained blocked. The rest of the district’s road network remained operational.

In Soreng district, the Sombaria–Jorethang route via Tharpu Road and the Soreng–Jorethang route via Malbasey Road were temporarily closed to facilitate maintenance of the steel bridge over Chudharey Khola, while other roads remained open.

Fresh landslides also disrupted traffic on NH-10, with the Rangpo–Siliguri stretch blocked at 29th Mile, Break Dara and Hanuman Mandir. Authorities advised commuters to use the alternative Darjeeling–Teesta route.

The Rangpo–Singtam road also remained blocked at 20th Mile due to a landslide. Officials deployed machinery to clear the debris and expected the route to reopen within about one-and-a-half hours. In the meantime, traffic was diverted through the Chewribotay–Duga route.

The Rangpo–Rorathang road also remained blocked at Chemaray Vir. Sikkim Police advised travellers to check the latest road conditions before undertaking journeys, as persistent rainfall continued to trigger landslides and disrupt connectivity across the state.
