Helipad Construction Death Sparks Political Row in Dhekiajuli Ahead of Polls

Udalguri-Sonitpur, April 6: The death of a labourer during helipad construction work in Dhekiajuli has triggered controversy and political reactions in Sonitpur district ahead of the Assembly elections.

The deceased, identified as Gorchand Barman of Chirajuli Colony, was injured on March 28 while working on preparations for a programme linked to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

According to family members, Barman had been engaged in construction work at a site where a helipad was being prepared. They alleged that he was compelled to undertake the work. His sons, Shivam Barman and Shakti Barman, were also present at the site.

The family claimed that the structure where the work was underway was in a dilapidated condition. Despite concerns raised, work reportedly continued, during which a wooden portion of the roof collapsed, leaving Barman critically injured.

He was initially taken to a local government hospital and later referred to a medical college for advanced treatment, where he died.

Family members described him as the sole breadwinner and alleged lack of immediate assistance following the incident. They have demanded justice and raised questions over the circumstances leading to the accident.

The incident has also drawn political attention, with allegations directed at local representatives, including minister Ashok Singhal, over the handling of the situation.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Batas Orang visited the bereaved family, bringing the issue into the ongoing electoral discourse in the constituency.

The development has intensified political tensions in Dhekiajuli, where campaigning is underway ahead of polling.
