High Alert in Delhi After Intel Warns of Possible LeT IED Plot Near Red Fort and Chandni Chowk

Delhi, Feb 21: Security agencies have placed the national capital on high alert following intelligence inputs warning of a possible terror strike near the historic Red Fort, with a temple in the congested Chandni Chowk area suspected to be a potential target.

According to intelligence sources, Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba is believed to have key religious sites in and around the Red Fort and parts of Chandni Chowk on its radar. The group is suspected of plotting an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in the area.

Sources indicated that the outfit may be seeking to avenge a February 6 blast at a mosque in Islamabad and could be planning a major strike in India. Intelligence inputs further suggest that prominent temples across the country, particularly those with heavy footfall, may be potential targets.

Security has been tightened in sensitive pockets of Old Delhi, especially around religious landmarks and crowded marketplaces. Agencies have stepped up surveillance measures and intensified patrolling in and around the Red Fort and adjoining areas to prevent any untoward incident.

The latest alert comes months after a deadly car explosion near the Red Fort on November 10, 2025, which claimed 12 lives. The blast, triggered by a vehicle laden with explosives near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, set several nearby vehicles ablaze and caused widespread panic.

In a related development, a Special NIA court at Patiala House Court on February 13 extended the investigation period by 45 days to complete the probe into the November 2025 Delhi blast case.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant while assuring that comprehensive preventive measures are in place to safeguard public safety.
