Himanta Biswa Sarma defends police action in Ghanakanta Gogoi encounter

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has defended the police action in the encounter that led to the death of Ghanakanta Gogoi, stating that the accused died after allegedly firing at police personnel, who retaliated.

Describing the incident as unfortunate, Sarma said the police should not be blamed for the death. “Do not blame the police for it. This is an unfortunate incident. He shot at the police, and the police fired back,” the Chief Minister said.

He maintained that police personnel were required to act when an accused attempted to flee and described Gogoi as a professional killer, adding that his conduct should have been different.

Sarma also clarified that the government had not issued any tweet regarding Gogoi’s death and said the court would deliver the final judgment on the matter.

“We have not given justice to anything. This is an unfortunate death,” he said, reiterating that the incident should not be viewed as a case of the police deliberately killing the accused.

His remarks came amid discussions over the circumstances surrounding Gogoi’s death in the police encounter.
