Himanta Biswa Sarma Inaugurates Star Cement’s Cachar Unit, Hails Boost to Barak Valley Economy

Guwahati, Feb 20: Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday, February 20, inaugurated Star Cement’s Cachar unit at Bihara, describing the project as a major step toward industrial expansion and job creation in the Barak Valley.

The Chief Minister said the new facility would strengthen the region’s economic base and reflects Assam’s accelerating industrial growth. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the greenfield cement plant has an annual production capacity of 2 million tonnes and incorporates advanced German technology.

The unit is the first private cement plant in the Barak Valley with its own railway siding, a feature expected to significantly enhance connectivity and streamline the transportation of raw materials and finished products. Officials noted that the project represents one of the largest industrial investments in the valley and is likely to stimulate economic activity while generating employment opportunities for local youth.

Separately, Sarma also highlighted the transformation of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, stating that it has evolved into a world-class gateway within a few years.

He added that the upgraded airport terminal, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will open to the public from February 22, marking another milestone in Assam’s infrastructure development drive.
