Guwahati, May 5: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma interacted with supporters and locals outside the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh headquarters in Guwahati on May 5, shortly after attending a meeting at the premises, a day after the BJP-led alliance secured a decisive electoral mandate.
As Sarma exited the venue, he was greeted by a large gathering of supporters who had assembled outside. The Chief Minister acknowledged the crowd, exchanged greetings and posed for photographs, with several attendees taking selfies before he departed.
The meeting followed a resounding victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, where the alliance secured a three-fourths majority in the 126-member House. The BJP alone won 82 seats, its best-ever performance in the state, while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad led by Atul Bora and the Bodoland People’s Front, secured 10 seats each.
The opposition faced a significant setback, with the Indian National Congress reduced to 15 seats. The All India United Democratic Front won two seats, while the All India Trinamool Congress managed to secure one.
The election marked the first Assembly polls contested under Sarma’s leadership as Chief Minister, with the BJP improving considerably from its 2021 tally of 60 seats. Among the notable results was the Jorhat constituency, where BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami defeated Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi by 23,182 votes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated party workers and thanked the people of Assam for the strong mandate, stating that the outcome reflected public endorsement of the NDA’s governance and development agenda.
