Guwahati, May 25: Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assam Legislative Assembly would create an opportunity for an “on-record discussion” on the need for such legislation in the state.
In a post on X, the chief minister stated that the proposed legislation would contribute towards fulfilling the vision of the nation’s founding fathers.
“The introduction of the Uniform Civil Code 2026 Bill in the Assam Vidhan Sabha paves the way for an on-record discussion on why #UCCAssam is the need of the hour and how it will help realise the path laid down by our founding fathers,” Sarma said.
Earlier in the day, Atul Bora introduced “The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, 2026 Bill” in the Assembly on behalf of the chief minister during the third day of the first session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly.
According to the proposed legislation, provisions include a ban on polygamy and mandatory registration of live-in relationships. However, the Bill will not apply to Scheduled Tribes residing in the state.
The introduction of the legislation also led to protests inside the Assembly, with opposition parties including the Indian National Congress, Raijor Dal led by Akhil Gogoi, and the All India Trinamool Congress demanding wider consultations with stakeholders before the Bill is debated and passed.
