Himanta Biswa Sarma Says Assam Will Continue Crime Crackdown as Key Indicators Improve

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the state government will continue its drive against crime, asserting that a sharp decline in crime figures and improved prosecution outcomes demonstrate the progress made in strengthening public safety across the state.

Sharing data on Assam’s criminal justice performance from 2021 to June 2026, Sarma said the government has worked relentlessly to improve law enforcement and vowed that Assam Police would continue to adopt technology-driven policing to sustain the gains.

According to the figures released by the chief minister, the number of registered crimes fell by 85 per cent, from 1,33,239 cases in 2021 to 20,582 by June 2026. Cases under investigation also declined by 92 per cent during the same period, while the crime rate per lakh population dropped by 70 per cent, from 379 to 112.

The data also indicated improvements in prosecution. The chargesheet filing rate increased from 39.4 per cent in 2021 to 86.6 per cent by June 2026, while the conviction rate rose from 6.1 per cent to 25.3 per cent.

“We have worked relentlessly to help build a Surakshit Assam. The drastic decline in crime and improved prosecution rates testify to our progress. The crackdown will continue, with Assam Police adopting modern, technology-driven practices,” Sarma said in a post on X.

The chief minister said the government remains committed to further strengthening policing and ensuring a safer environment through sustained enforcement measures and the increased use of modern technology.
