Himanta Biswa Sarma Says Remarks Target Illegal Infiltration, Not Muslims, Responds to Owaisi Criticism

Guwahati, Feb 9: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said he does not understand which of his statements offended AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, asserting that his remarks have never been directed against Muslims but are focused solely on illegal infiltration from Bangladesh.

Responding to the criticism, Sarma said his position has consistently been against unlawful migration and not against any religious community. He maintained that his comments were aimed at highlighting the challenges posed by illegal infiltration and its impact on the state and the country. According to the chief minister, the issue should be addressed collectively, cutting across political affiliations.

Sarma argued that India’s limited resources cannot sustain unchecked illegal migration, stressing that the burden ultimately affects citizens. He said the issue of infiltration should unite political leaders rather than divide them, adding that concerns over resources, livelihoods and demographic balance must be discussed openly.

Reiterating his stand, the chief minister said his statements have always centred on illegal immigration and its consequences, and not on Muslims as a community. His remarks come amid an ongoing political exchange over his comments on infiltration and national resources, with Sarma maintaining that the debate should remain focused on legality and governance rather than religion.
