Himanta Biswa Sarma Targets Congress, Calls Pawan Khera ‘Absconder’

Guwahati, April 9: Assam Chief Minister and Jalukbari candidate Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 9 launched a sharp attack on the Indian National Congress and its senior leader Pawan Khera amid the ongoing Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma questioned the relevance of the Congress in Assam, remarking, “Where is this Congress party? Which Congress party? I have not even heard about it.”

He also took aim at Khera, referring to him as a “bhagora” (absconder), and said he did not see any need to respond to his statements.

The remarks come at a time of intensified political contestation ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls, reflecting the Chief Minister’s aggressive stance against the opposition.

Observers say Sarma’s comments are part of a broader strategy to undermine the Congress’s standing in the state, particularly in constituencies where the party is perceived to be on weaker footing.

The Congress has not issued any immediate response to the Chief Minister’s remarks.
