Himanta Biswa Sarma Targets Owaisi, Accuses Congress of Silence Ahead of Assam Polls

Guwahati, April 4: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 4 launched a sharp political attack on Asaduddin Owaisi, alleging that his campaign rhetoric in the state is aimed at “weaponising the Miya community” for electoral gains.

Sarma claimed that the Indian National Congress had facilitated Owaisi’s entry into Assam’s campaign landscape to influence voter dynamics and create religious polarisation. He further alleged that speeches made during the visit were intended to mobilise specific sections of the electorate.

Targeting the Congress, the Chief Minister said the party had failed to respond to such remarks and remained silent on controversial statements and incidents involving individuals like Yunus Tamuli and Yunus Ali. He also criticised Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging a lack of engagement with his constituency in Jorhat over the past two years.

Reaffirming confidence in the BJP’s electoral prospects, Sarma said the party is likely to secure between 90 and 100 seats in the 126-member Assembly, adding that it could surpass the 100-seat mark. Referring to the Khowang constituency, he expressed confidence that BJP candidate Chakradhar Gogoi would register a decisive victory, citing strong public response during recent campaign visits.

On the killing of a BJP leader in Sonari, Sarma said it would be premature to link the incident to the elections, noting that conclusions should only be drawn after a proper investigation.

He maintained that the BJP’s governance record and sustained grassroots outreach have strengthened its position as campaigning intensifies ahead of the polls.
