Himanta Biswa Sarma Thanks Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay, Says Assam-Bhutan Ties to Grow Stronger

Guwahati, May 26: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 26 expressed gratitude to Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay for his visit to the state and said the relationship between Assam and Bhutan is expected to deepen further in the future.

Responding to Tobgay’s post on X, Sarma highlighted the importance of Assam’s long-standing association with Bhutan and said the state greatly values its multifaceted partnership with the neighbouring country. He also expressed confidence that cooperation between the two sides would continue expanding under the leadership of Narendra Modi.

“Thank you for your wonderful visit and the meaningful discussions,” Sarma wrote, adding that Assam looks forward to strengthening this relationship in the coming years.

Earlier, Tobgay had shared details of his engagements during the visit, mentioning his meetings with Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Sarma in Guwahati. According to the Bhutanese Prime Minister, the discussions reaffirmed a common commitment towards strengthening the longstanding relationship between Bhutan and Assam.

Tobgay arrived in Guwahati on Monday and received a formal welcome from the Assam Governor and Chief Minister, reflecting the close cultural and diplomatic ties shared between the two sides.

After arriving in the city, the Bhutan Prime Minister visited the State Guest House at Koinadhora, where he was received by Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora.

Bora described the Assam-Bhutan relationship as one built on mutual trust, harmony and strong socio-cultural connections. He said the friendship had evolved over generations through shared traditions, people-to-people interactions and cooperation across multiple sectors.

He further expressed optimism that the visit would help create new opportunities for regional cooperation, economic growth and cultural exchanges between Assam and Bhutan.

Senior officials, including Director General of Police Harmeet Singh and General Administration Department Secretary Narsing Pawar, were also present during the reception.
