Holi Celebrations in Tripura Marred by Road Accidents, Over 400 Preventive Arrests During Police Crackdown

Agartala, March 5: Holi festivities in Tripura were overshadowed by a series of road accidents and widespread preventive arrests as authorities enforced strict security measures to maintain order across the state during the celebrations.

According to Tripura Police, security arrangements were significantly strengthened with additional personnel deployed at key locations and along major highways to ensure public safety. Despite these measures, several road accidents were reported from different parts of the state during the festival.

In one tragic incident at Uttam Bhakta Chowmuhani in Sepahijala district, a collision between a motorcycle and a truck claimed the life of Prasenjit Ghosh. He was rushed to a hospital following the crash but was declared brought dead on arrival.

Another accident occurred near Holy Cross College in West Tripura district at around 6:45 pm, where an unidentified vehicle reportedly struck a mentally challenged man. The injured individual was immediately shifted to AGMC and GBP Hospital for medical treatment.

Earlier in the evening, at about 5:10 pm, a self-accident was reported in Melaghar. Akas Mia, a resident of Mohanbhog, sustained injuries to his head and neck after reportedly losing control of his vehicle.

Alongside managing accidents, police conducted extensive enforcement drives to curb drunk driving and maintain peaceful celebrations. During the operations, 20 individuals were detained for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities also detained 206 people under preventive provisions of the Tripura Police Act for consuming alcohol and roaming in public places. In total, 445 preventive arrests were recorded across the state during the Holi celebrations.

Traffic enforcement teams issued 330 challans under the Motor Vehicles Act and collected fines amounting to ₹5,69,500. An additional ₹13,000 was recovered for overspeeding violations as part of the statewide enforcement campaign.
