HRA Urges Arunachal Government to Set Up Special Relief Fund for Keyi Panyor Disaster Victims

Itanagar, June 26: The Human Rights of Arunachal (HRA) has called on the state government to establish a dedicated special relief fund for residents of Keyi Panyor district, following extensive destruction caused by recent natural disasters in the region. The organisation said the scale of damage to lives, property and livelihoods requires immediate and structured financial support beyond existing relief mechanisms.

In a statement issued on Friday, HRA Chairman Kipa Kaha and Secretary General Jesy Debia emphasised that a specialised fund would help provide timely assistance to affected families and communities. They noted that while compensation related to North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) projects may fall under central government responsibility, both the state government and NEEPCO should extend full support to those impacted on the ground.

The organisation highlighted that local communities have borne the brunt of the disaster, facing loss of lives, destruction of homes, disruption of livelihoods and damage to essential public infrastructure. It further stated that the existing MLA Local Area Development (LAD) Fund is insufficient to address the magnitude of the crisis, calling instead for enhanced relief and rehabilitation measures through additional dedicated funding.

Expressing confidence in the leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister, the HRA urged the state government to take swift action to ensure comprehensive rehabilitation for affected residents. The group also acknowledged the efforts of local MLA Toko Tatung, who has initiated assistance measures in the NEEPCO-43 and Possa areas.

The HRA further appealed to civil society organisations, student bodies, indigenous faith groups and religious organisations to extend humanitarian support to families affected by the disaster, stressing the need for collective action in the recovery process.
