Guwahati: The 10th Foundation Day of ICAR-ATARI, Zone VI was celebrated with enthusiasm at its Guwahati premises, marking a decade of service in strengthening agricultural extension and technology transfer across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
The programme began with registration, reception of dignitaries, and lighting of the ceremonial lamp. The event was graced by Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Member of Parliament from Kaziranga, as Chief Guest. Guests of Honour included Niranjan Kalita, Vice Chancellor of Assam Veterinary & Fisheries University, and Padma Shri awardee Jogesh Deuri. Eminent agricultural scientist K. M. Bujarbaruah, Former Vice Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University, also addressed the gathering.
Welcoming the participants, G. Kadirvel, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Zone VI, highlighted major initiatives undertaken over the past decade, including NICRA, ARYA, the National Mission on Natural Farming, oilseed and pulse demonstrations, drone interventions, and the Rice Fallow Intensification Programme covering about 30,000 hectares. He also referred to the Traditional Village Knowledge Bank in Arunachal Pradesh, the Vibrant Village Programme along the Indo-China border, and the filing of 120 applications for farmers’ variety registration under PPV&FRA.

In his address, the Chief Guest stressed transforming agriculture from subsistence to enterprise, with focus on youth engagement, mechanisation, and strong Farmer Producer Organizations. Other speakers highlighted integrated farming, livestock and poultry development, data-driven extension models, and the immense potential of Eri and Muga silk in the North East. Around 150 officials from KVKs, ICAR institutes, line departments, boards, and farmers attended the programme.
