Nagaon: The 77th Independence Day Cup Football Tournament, dedicated to Lt iconic singer Zubeen Garg’s memory and organized by the Nagaon Sports Association, kicked off at the Nurul Amin Stadium today here.
The tournament features top teams from across the country competing for the coveted trophy. In the opening match, Trinayan Gosthi entered into Pre quater level of the tournament, defeating Kachak FC, Diphu with 2-0 margin. The match saw intense action, with Trinayan’s Paikomba Meitei scoring the first goal in the 45th minute. Despite Kachak FC’s efforts to level the score, Trinayan’s defense held strong, and Dibyajyoti Bordoloi sealed the win with a goal in the final moments of the game.
The organizing secretary of the tournament, Tapan Kumar Das, welcomed the teams and guests, while Rupak Sarma, local MLA and President of the Sports Association, highlighted the progress of sports in the district. Former international footballer Swadhin Deka Raja, who inaugurated the tournament, reminisced about playing matches at the stadium and paid tribute to the late Nurul Amin.

The event also honored 60 senior citizens, men and women, who are sports personalities and organizers in the district.
Today’s matches include: Amlan Gosthi vs Tezpur Football Club at Nurul Amin Stadium. Harisinga Town Club (Udalguri) vs Karshang Football Club (Majuli) at Raidongia playground.
