Kokrajhar: Assam Director General of Police Harmit Singh arrived in Kokrajhar on Thursday, October 23, to personally review the security situation following a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion that damaged a section of the railway track. The blast, which occurred around midnight between Kokrajhar and Salakati stations, has partially suspended train services and caused significant disruption to rail traffic in the region, sparking widespread panic among passengers.
Upon arrival, DGP Singh chaired a high-level meeting with senior police officers and security officials at the 7th Battalion police camp in Charaikhola. The meeting focused on assessing the incident and formulating effective preventive strategies to avert future disruptions. During the session, the DGP issued clear directives to the local authorities: intensify security surveillance across the entire district. He specifically emphasized heightened focus on railway lines and other vital installations, stressing the paramount need for coordinated efforts among the state police, railway police, and central security forces.
Speaking to the media following the security review, DGP Singh officially confirmed that the damage was caused by an IED. “Forensic teams have collected samples from the site,” he stated. “The investigation is ongoing, and we will soon identify the perpetrators and their motives. The culprits will be apprehended shortly.” The explosion site is approximately five kilometers east of the Kokrajhar railway station. In the aftermath of the attack, security forces have been massively deployed throughout Kokrajhar, and patrols along the vulnerable railway tracks have been significantly strengthened. While repair work is underway on the damaged track, authorities have assured the public that all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure passenger safety and prevent any recurrence of such an incident.
