IED Found and Safely Defused at Umsning Market in Ri-Bhoi District

Meghalaya: An improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered at Umsning market in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district and safely defused by security personnel, police reported on Sunday.

According to Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh, authorities found an unattended bag containing suspected explosives in a compound in front of Meghalaya Rural Bank on Saturday evening. A Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and a K-9 unit were immediately deployed to the site. After a detailed inspection, the team confirmed the presence of explosives and carried out a controlled defusal operation.

“Upon analysis, the device was found to contain 4.7 kg of gelatine, 10 detonators, and around 50 iron rods used as splinters,” SP Singh said, adding that all materials were seized safely following standard operating procedures.

No injuries or property damage were reported during the operation. Police have registered a case, and investigations are currently underway. One suspect has been identified, and efforts are on to apprehend him, the SP confirmed.
