This is not the first time IIT Guwahati has been rocked by unnatural deaths. In recent years, the campus has witnessed multiple fatalities, sparking concerns among students and parents. In one case, Bimlesh Kumar, a third-year B.Tech student, was found dead in his hostel, while earlier an M.Tech student, Soumya, was discovered hanging in her room. The spate of incidents drew widespread criticism, eventually leading to the resignation of Professor Kanduru V. Krishna, then Dean of the institute.

In response, the administration had introduced measures such as mandatory medical check-ups, open dialogue sessions, and a faculty advisory system to address student and staff well-being. However, the recurrence of such tragedies indicates that more robust interventions may be necessary.

The latest incident has once again left the student community shaken, with many demanding a thorough investigation and stricter preventive steps. The death of an employee, rather than a student, raises deeper questions about the systemic challenges within the campus environment of one of India’s premier institutions.
