Illegal Fertiliser Consignment Seized in Manipur, Legal Action Initiated

Imphal, April 28: The Directorate of Agriculture Manipur has confirmed that a large consignment of fertilisers intercepted in Moirang, under Bishnupur district, was being transported illegally without authorisation, with legal proceedings now initiated against those involved.

Addressing the media, Director of Agriculture Peter Salam said around 600 bags of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP), commonly referred to as “Diamond”, were intercepted on April 26. The consignment was initially stopped by local residents on suspicion and later seized by Manipur Police.

Preliminary findings indicate that the truck carrying the fertilisers is linked to Agro-Tech Solutions based in Kwakta. The consignment is believed to have originated from Bihar and transported into the state without the necessary approvals.

Officials revealed that Agro-Tech Solutions is neither a registered nor authorised dealer permitted to handle fertiliser distribution within Manipur. The seized consignment is estimated to be worth approximately Rs 6 lakh.

The department stated that the incident constitutes a violation of regulations governing fertiliser movement and distribution, with action being taken under the Essential Commodities Act and the Fertilizer Control Order. Proceedings will cover all parties involved, including suppliers and intended recipients.

Describing the case as unprecedented, Salam said this is the first instance of an unauthorised dealer transporting such a large quantity of fertiliser into the state from Bihar.

On supply concerns, the Directorate assured that adequate stocks are available ahead of the Kharif season. Approximately 1.1 lakh bags were distributed last year, while nearly 1 lakh bags are currently stocked in government godowns. Plans are in place to procure an additional 70,000 to 80,000 bags over the next three to four months.

To ensure accessibility, around 150 distribution points have been established across the state, alongside efforts to facilitate doorstep delivery for farmers. The department reiterated its commitment to maintaining a steady and timely supply of fertilisers during the upcoming agricultural cycle.
