Guwahati: Team India created history on Day 2 of the second Test against the West Indies by declaring their first innings at a commanding 518/5, breaking a 64-year-old record in the process.
India became the first team since Australia in the tied 1960 Gabba Test to register 50-plus partnerships for each of the first five wickets in a Test innings. This is only the third time in India’s Test history that all top-five partnerships have crossed 50, following similar feats against England (Mumbai, 1993) and Australia (Ahmedabad, 2023).
Yashasvi Jaiswal led the charge with a brilliant 175, narrowly missing a double century after being run out. Skipper Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 129, marking his 10th ICC WTC hundred and fifth as captain in 2025, equalling Virat Kohli’s record for most Test hundreds by an Indian captain in a calendar year. Sai Sudharsan contributed 87, while KL Rahul added 38, ensuring India’s top order dominated throughout.

Gill also became the highest-century scorer for India in ICC WTC matches, surpassing Rohit Sharma. Achieving his fifth captain’s hundred in just 12 innings, he became the third-fastest Test captain to reach this milestone, behind Alastair Cook and Sunil Gavaskar.
For the West Indies, spinner Jomel Warrican was the only standout, taking 3 for 98, as India maintained complete control. With the declaration, India ended the day firmly on top, showcasing batting depth, resilience, and Shubman Gill’s growing stature as one of India’s most prolific Test captains.
