Indian Army Marks Pahalgam Attack Anniversary with Warning on Terror, Recalls Operation Sindoor Response

National, April 21: A year after the deadly terror strike in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army has reiterated a strong warning against cross-border terrorism, underscoring its retaliatory response through Operation Sindoor.

The April 22, 2025 attack, carried out by Pakistan-backed militants, left 26 civilians dead after gunmen entered a village and conducted targeted killings. Investigations later revealed that victims were questioned about their religion before being killed, intensifying national outrage.

Marking the anniversary, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI) stated that such acts would not go unanswered. Emphasising a firm stance, the Army said that when “boundaries of humanity are crossed,” the response would be decisive, reaffirming India’s commitment to justice and national unity.

The human cost of the attack continues to be felt by affected families. The wife of Prasanta Kumar Satapathy, one of the victims, said the loss has had a lasting impact, adding that while financial assistance was provided, a promised government job is yet to be delivered.

In the aftermath of the attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, targeting terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The operation resulted in the destruction of multiple launchpads linked to groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen, with over 100 militants reportedly killed.

The strikes triggered a brief escalation, including drone attacks and cross-border shelling. Indian forces responded with counter-strikes targeting strategic installations, before a ceasefire was reached on May 10 following communication between the two sides’ military leadership.

Subsequent operations, including Operation Mahadev, led to the elimination of three terrorists believed to be directly involved in the Pahalgam killings.

On the diplomatic front, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and halted bilateral trade with Pakistan, signalling a broader policy response. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that acts of terror would receive a “fitting reply,” asserting that there would be no distinction between perpetrators and their backers.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that Operation Sindoor remains ongoing, indicating sustained vigilance. Senior military leadership also highlighted the coordinated role of the armed forces, with Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi pointing to tri-service synergy, while Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh and Navy Chief Dinesh K Tripathi emphasised precision operations and strategic deployment.

In his Independence Day address last year, Modi also announced Mission Sudarshan Chakra to enhance India’s offensive capabilities and preparedness against future threats.

As the anniversary is observed, attention remains focused on accountability, continued security preparedness and the fulfilment of assurances made to victims’ families.
