Indian Vice-Presidential polls underway, PM Modi casts first vote

New Delhi, Sep 9: Voting for the post of the Indian Vice-President is underway. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to cast his vote. Direct contest between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate C P Radhakrishnan and the Opposition block’s candidate B Sudershan Reddy can be witnessed with the NDA candidate having a clear edge over the opposition block’s candidate.

The polls were necessitated after the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankar, former Vice-President, citing medical reasons.

Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arjun Ram Meghwal and Kiren Rijiju were among the early voters. Among others who cast their votes included Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Ram Gopal Yadav amongst others.   

Members of both the Houses of Parliament will cast their votes in the Parliament between 10 am and 5 pm today. Counting of votes will begin in the evening at 6 pm. The results will be announced later this evening.

It needs to mentioned here that- three regional players, Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) stay neutral in the Vice- Presidential poll, abstaining from voting
