Interpol Issues Red Notice Against Sikkim Woman Linked to Wildlife Trafficking Case

Interpol has issued a Red Notice at India’s request for Yangchen Lachungpa, a resident of North Sikkim, in connection with an alleged wildlife trafficking network involving tiger and pangolin derivatives. The notice, published on 2 October 2025, seeks her prosecution in a case registered at the Satpura Tiger Reserve in Sohagpur, Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh, which dates back to July 2015.

Lachungpa is accused under the Wildlife Protection Act for her alleged role in the trade of tiger bones, pangolin scales and other prohibited animal parts. Case records state that she had allegedly given shelter to accused trafficker Jaiy Tamang in New Delhi and that her mobile phone was allegedly used to support the illegal trade. Interpol’s documents also highlight links to other accused individuals, including those arrested in Nepal.

Authorities note that 27 people, including Lachungpa, have been arrested in connection with the case. She was previously apprehended on 15 September 2017 by the Madhya Pradesh State Tiger Strike Force and later released on bail granted by a court in East Sikkim. However, she has reportedly failed to appear before the court since, leading to the initiation of proclamation proceedings to declare her absconding.

Officials in Madhya Pradesh have already filed the charge sheet, while the District Magistrate Court in Sohagpur continues to hear the case. Interpol’s notice further states that she is believed to be associated with an organised trafficking network, prompting renewed efforts to trace her whereabouts.
