Guwahati, Sep 6: The district administration along with police officials from both the neighboring states of Assam and Nagaland will jointly conduct all eviction drives along the Nagaland- Assam inter- state borders. This will ensure that no one-sided actions is being taken and will also prevent the influx of illegal immigrants, Yanthungo Patton, Deputy CM, Nagaland said on Thursday.
Speaking during the second day of the Nagaland State Assembly Session, the Deputy CM said that the Nagaland Government, under the able leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio is closely monitoring the situation in inter-state border. Patton also informed the house that during the meeting between both the Chief Ministers of Assam and Nagaland on August 21, it was decided between both the parties that any further plantations or pillar erections in the border areas be stopped until matters are resolved at the Chief Ministerial level.
The Nagaland Cabinet during its meeting on August 26 resolved to evict all illegal immigrants, and any required plantation drives would be carried out jointly by both the states, with coordination among district administrations, police department and forest officials along with the involvement of local communities.
Patton, who holds the Home and Border Affairs portfolio, stated that during the cabinet meeting it was also decided that talks will be conducted with the Union Home Minister regarding the continued presence of Assam Police forces in the Disputed Area Belt (DAB), which is contrary to the 1972 Agreement. Assam now operates 45 permanent police outposts in the DAB, while Nagaland has withdrawn all its five pre-1972 police outposts, said the Nagaland Deputy CM.
