Congress MLA Joy Prakash Das on Wednesday, July 29, expressed concern that the flood situation in Assam could worsen further, citing the rising death toll and urging both the state and Central governments to intensify relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Addressing the media, Das said the number of flood-related deaths had reached 75 and was continuing to increase, describing the disaster as a major humanitarian crisis. He said the loss of lives was deeply distressing and called on the Assam Government to provide an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased victim.
The Congress legislator also announced that all Congress MLAs in Assam would donate their previous month’s salaries to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to support ongoing flood relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Seeking greater involvement from the Centre, Das urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to visit the flood-affected areas of Assam to assess the situation on the ground and understand the challenges faced by affected communities.
He said the state required sustained assistance to address the humanitarian crisis and ensure timely relief and support reached all those impacted by the floods.
