Jute supplier tries to commit suicide inside Silghat Jute Mill

Nagaon, December 2: A businessman attempted to commit suicide by consuming poison at the Assam Cooperative Jute Mill in Silghat on today. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local business community.

       According to reports, the businessman, identified as Haradhan Chakraborty, had been struggling to recover Rs 13 lakhs owed to him by the jute mill authorities for supplying jute. Despite repeated visits to the mill, he failed to receive the payment, which led to mental stress and ultimately, the drastic step.

         Chakraborty, a resident of Ambagan-Lawkhowa, was rushed to the Jakhalabandha Medical Hospital after consuming poison, where he was referred to Tezpur medical college and hospital.

      The incident highlights the plight of around 50 jute suppliers who are yet to receive their payments, totaling Rs. 8 crores, from the jute mill authorities. The suppliers have been demanding payment for their supplies, but the authorities have allegedly failed to respond.

      The incident has raised questions about the financial health of the jute mill and the authorities’ handling of the situation. The suppliers have expressed frustration and despair, with many feeling mentally drained due to the non-payment of their dues.
