KAAC Orders Relocation of Govt. Offices from Kheroni PGR Land

Guwahati: The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has directed the immediate relocation of several government offices and institutions operating on Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) land at Kheroni in West Karbi Anglong, reaffirming its stand against the use of protected grazing land for non-agricultural purposes. In a directive issued by the KAAC Land and Revenue Department, the Council ordered 11 major departments and services functioning on the Kheroni PGR land to vacate the area within 15 days. The offices asked to relocate include the Kheroni Police Station, post office, banking institutions, electricity and irrigation departments, along with other government establishments.

Officials said nearly 265 government offices and state-sponsored schemes are currently operating within the Kheroni PGR area. However, the Council clarified that educational institutions have been temporarily exempted from the relocation order. The decision comes in the wake of a recent eviction drive conducted by the Karbi Anglong district administration to reclaim government land under the Bakaliaghat Irrigation Department. During the operation, long-standing encroachments were removed as part of efforts to restore government-owned land.

According to official estimates, around 350 bighas of land had been illegally occupied over the years, with more than 755 houses constructed in the area, sheltering a population exceeding 2,000 people. A mosque located within the encroached land was also demolished during the eviction drive. KAAC officials said the action is aimed at protecting grazing reserves and ensuring lawful use of government land.
