Guwahati, Feb 7: The Kamrup district administration on February 6 carried out an eviction drive against illegally operating brick kilns under the Chhaygaon Revenue Circle, demolishing several unauthorised units accused of causing environmental damage.
Officials said multiple illegal brick kilns had been functioning unchecked in villages such as Bamunbari and Gelabari, emitting toxic smoke and foul odour that adversely affected the surrounding areas. The issue had recently drawn public attention following media reports alleging that the kilns were operating with the knowledge of local authorities.
Acting on these reports, a joint team led by Chhaygaon Revenue Circle Officer Nandan Nilotpal Bhagawati launched a large-scale eviction operation. The drive was conducted with the assistance of village heads, officials of the Nagarbera Forest Department and personnel from the Mandira police outpost.
During the operation, several illegal brick kilns were demolished using excavators, effectively halting their activities.
Following the drive, the Circle Officer warned kiln owners against setting up unauthorised brick kilns in the future and said similar operations would continue if illegal activities persisted. He added that the district administration remained committed to taking strict action against violators to curb environmental degradation.
