Guwahati, Jan 10: The Office of the District Election Officer (DEO), Kamrup Metropolitan, on January 9 rejected an allegation suggesting that as many as 22 voters had been enrolled under a single house number in the 35 No. New Guwahati Legislative Assembly Constituency, terming the claim misleading and factually incorrect.
Election officials said the complaint triggered an immediate field-level verification by the concerned Booth Level Officer (BLO). The verification revealed that only 11 voters were actually registered under house number 136, contrary to the allegation. The remaining voters cited in the complaint were found to be enrolled under different house numbers, including 156(1), 236(a) and 136(b), and belonged to separate families.
According to the BLO’s report, two families are currently residing under house number 136. These families belong to Makbul Hossain, son of Anjur Ali, and Javed Ali, son of Banu Ali. Both households live within the same premises and are registered at Polling Station No. 103, located at Ganesh Mandir Higher Secondary School (Girls’ Wing).
Officials further clarified that electoral records from 2014, prior to the delimitation of assembly constituencies, show that these families were earlier listed under house number 236 at Polling Station No. 113, Ganesh Mandir High School (Boys’ Wing), which then fell under the erstwhile No. 8 Dispur Legislative Assembly Constituency. Changes in constituency boundaries and house number references appear to have contributed to the confusion.
The DEO’s office categorically stated that the allegation of 22 voters being newly added under a single house number is “completely false and baseless.” It added that discrepancies related to house number references have been identified at the booth level and corrective measures are currently in progress.
Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, the District Election Officer, Kamrup Metropolitan, said continuous efforts are being made to ensure that the electoral rolls remain accurate, transparent and free from errors.
