Karbi Woman Conservationist Represents Assam at IUCN Workshop in Thailand

Guwahati: Showcasing the rising leadership of Karbi women in conservation, Joshna Terangpi, Project Officer at biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak, participated in an international workshop organised by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, from November 24 to 28, 2025. The event brought together 37 participants from seven South and Southeast Asian countries, all working in biodiversity conservation and community livelihoods.

Hosted at the Felix River Kwai Resort, the workshop focused on strengthening skills in project monitoring, evaluation, communication and community-centric conservation planning. It emphasised inclusive decision-making to enhance local stewardship and support resilient, nature-based solutions.

Terangpi, an indigenous Karbi woman, shared her experiences in community engagement, highlighting both successful women-led livelihood initiatives and the challenges faced in remote areas. She also gained insights into innovative approaches adopted across the region, making the exposure especially meaningful as it marked her first international travel.

Her work in mobilising women and promoting sustainable livelihoods in ten project villages across Diring and Kohora in Karbi Anglong received appreciation from participants. She is the daughter of Kaban Engtipi and Lawrance Terang of Chokihola, Karbi Anglong.

Aaranyak was also represented by Senior Manager Dr. Jayanta Kumar Roy and Director Dr. M. Firoz Ahmed, who shared long-term conservation learnings from the Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong and Manas landscapes. Aaranyak acknowledged the support of IUCN-KfW towards its Natural Resource Management Programme.
