National, Jan 22: Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiran Rijiju will convene an all-party meeting of floor leaders from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on January 27, a day before the commencement of Parliament’s Budget Session. The meeting, to be held in the main committee room, is intended to facilitate coordination among parties and ensure the smooth conduct of legislative business during a session expected to address several key national issues.
The Budget Session will begin on January 28 and continue until April 2, with a scheduled recess in between. The first phase of the session will run from January 28 to February 13, while the second phase is slated from March 9 to April 2. Over the course of the session, Parliament is expected to meet for a total of 30 sittings.
Formal proceedings will open with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of both Houses. The Union Budget for the 2026–27 financial year will be presented on February 1, setting the economic and policy tone for the year ahead.
In the lead-up to the session, the Ministry of Finance reiterated key customs duty measures announced earlier, highlighting the government’s focus on boosting domestic electronics manufacturing. In the previous Budget, the basic customs duty on flat panel displays was increased to 20 per cent to correct an inverted duty structure, while duties on open cells and critical components were reduced to 5 per cent. The government also fully exempted customs duty on parts used in the manufacture of open cells for LCD and LED televisions, measures aligned with the broader Make in India initiative to strengthen India’s position as a global electronics manufacturing hub.
The January 27 all-party meeting is expected to help finalise the legislative agenda and set the groundwork for orderly discussions and debates throughout the Budget Session.
