During his journey from Imphal to Kamjong, BJP MLA and former Manipur rural development minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh drew attention to the heartfelt appeals of displaced Kuki families who expressed their desire to return to their homes. The 61-year-old legislator made the remarks after interacting with internally displaced persons during his visit to Litan in the Naga-dominated Ukhrul district.
Accompanied by a small team, Khemchand spoke with members of the Kuki community who have been living in relief camps since ethnic tensions forced them to flee their villages. His aides said the MLA asked the displaced families about the difficulties they have been facing, listening to accounts of disrupted livelihoods, uncertainty, and the emotional strain of prolonged displacement.
The families told him they wished to rebuild their lives and return to their homes with the help of the government. They conveyed that rehabilitation support and a secure environment were essential for restoring normalcy. Khemchand said the longing to return home was a common sentiment among those he met, underscoring the urgent need for peace and stability.
“When we met everyone from the Kuki community, they said they wanted to go home, and the government should help,” the MLA said, emphasising that lives and futures have been upended by the violence. He reaffirmed that the restoration of peace is vital to ensure that displaced communities can safely rehabilitate and move forward.
