Land dispute turns fatal in Cachar; man shot dead, four arrested

Silchar, April 21: A long-standing land dispute in Cachar district turned deadly on Monday morning after a 60-year-old man was allegedly shot and beaten to death in Kadamtilla village under Jirighat Police Station.

The deceased, identified as Luku Miya of Baghkhal, was reportedly taken from his residence by a group of armed men who arrived at his house earlier in the day. According to police sources, the assailants called him outside, forcibly removed him, and later shot him before assaulting him with sticks. He died at the scene.

Preliminary investigations suggest the killing was linked to a prolonged land dispute in the area, which had led to simmering tensions.

Police launched a swift operation following the incident and arrested four individuals in connection with the case. The accused have been identified as Saharul Haque Laskar (27), Sajul Islam Laskar (26), Babul Haque Choudhury (34), and Suzan Aktar Laskar (18), all residents of the district.

During the operation, police seized two factory-made 12-bore rifles, a .22 calibre pistol, eight rounds of ammunition of various calibres, and three mobile phones believed to be linked to the crime.

Investigators are analysing the recovered weapons and digital evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine the role of each. Police said the involvement of additional suspects has not been ruled out.

Further investigation is underway.
