Lightning Strike Kills Over Three Dozen Livestock in Lakhimpur

North Lakhimpur: More than three dozen livestock were killed after a lightning strike hit a farm in the Dhakuakhana sub-division of Lakhimpur district in the early hours of Friday. The incident took place around 1:30 am when a thunderstorm accompanied by lightning struck Mazgaon village in Abhaypur under Dhakuakhana. The lightning reportedly hit the goat farm belonging to a local resident, Tapan Mili. According to local sources, around 30 goats were killed instantly in the strike. In addition, three cows, several poultry birds and the owner’s pet dog also died in the incident. Villagers discovered the charred remains of the animals early in the morning in the backyard of the farm.

The lightning strike also completely destroyed the shed of the goat farm, which was reduced to ashes. The sudden disaster has caused significant financial loss to the farm owner. Locals expressed concern over the increasing frequency of thunderstorms and lightning incidents in the region. Experts attribute the rising number of lightning strikes to the formation of convective thunderstorm clouds caused by rising temperatures and the broader impacts of climate change.

Notably, Lakhimpur district, like many other parts of the state, has been experiencing dry weather and a rainfall deficit since September 2025. Scientific studies suggest that lightning activity worldwide may increase significantly with rising global temperatures, with estimates indicating nearly a 12 percent rise in lightning strikes for every 1°C increase in global temperature.
