Litan in Manipur’s Ukhrul Remains Tense Amid Gunfire and Arson

Imphal, Feb 10: The situation in the Litan area of Manipur’s Ukhrul district remained volatile on February 10, with reports of gunfire and fresh incidents of arson despite ongoing efforts by the government and security agencies to restore normalcy.

Officials said violence entered its third consecutive day on Tuesday morning, prompting security forces to remain on high alert and deploy additional personnel to prevent further escalation.

On February 9, a team of legislators led by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho visited Litan to assess the ground situation. The team met leaders of both communities and appealed for restraint. The deputy chief minister assured that those involved in arson would be identified and arrested.

BJP MLAs Govindas Konthoujam and Kh Ibomcha said several security measures had been taken to bring the situation under control, including the deployment of additional forces and initiation of dialogue with community leaders.

The unrest reportedly began on Sunday night following an alleged altercation between two intoxicated individuals from the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities on Saturday night. The Tangkhul Naga individual was allegedly assaulted by a group linked to the Kuki community, triggering arson and subsequent violence.
