LMCH receives first cadaver as retired professor donates body

Lakhimpur: Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital (LMCH) received its first cadaver following the death of Fakir Mohan Nayak, a retired English professor of Panigaon Om Prakash Dinodia College, Lakhimpur, on Thursday night. He was 65 and had been suffering from a prolonged illness.

Born in Cuttack, Odisha, Prof. Nayak completed his schooling at Champeswar G P High School and later earned his MA in English from Ravenshaw College, now Ravenshaw University. He joined Panigaon Om Prakash Dinodia College as an Assistant Professor in 1988 and served the institution for over three decades before retiring in 2021. After retirement, he had settled in North Lakhimpur. Known for his gentle nature and dedication to teaching, Prof. Nayak was widely respected among students and colleagues. In a rare act of generosity, he donated his body to LMCH for medical education and research. He had also pledged to donate his eyes.

A team from LMCH received his mortal remains on Friday in a simple and solemn ceremony held at his residence in Bormuria Tiniali, North Lakhimpur. Prof. Nayak is survived by his wife and two sons. His passing has been deeply mourned across the district, while his decision to donate his body has been widely appreciated as a noble contribution to medical science and society.
