Locals in Dhubri Launch Creative Protest Against Tree Felling

Dhubri: In a heartfelt and creative show of resistance, locals and social organizations in Dhubri have launched a protest against the felling of trees near the historic Wimco factory area by placing photographs of the late music legend Zubeen Garg on the cut trunks. The unique demonstration aims to “keep Zubeen Garg alive through nature,” symbolizing his lifelong bond with environmental conservation.

Residents have raised strong objections to the large-scale tree cutting reportedly carried out by a non-Assamese businessman who recently purchased the Wimco factory premises. Several trees, believed to be over 70 years old, were allegedly removed to make space for electricity poles and new constructions. Locals accused the developer of blatant deforestation and environmental damage.

Despite multiple complaints to the local forest department, the Wimco Bachao Committee claimed that tree felling continues unchecked. In protest, residents and activists gathered in front of the factory, adorning the remaining tree stumps with Zubeen Garg’s pictures as a poignant reminder of the need to protect nature.

Prominent figures including Dhubri Ex-MLA Rasool Hoque Bahadur, environmentalist Suchibrata Sinha Choudhury, social worker Simul Sarkar, and members of the All Assam Reporters’ Manch, AMSU, and Goria Moria Desi Jatiya Parishad condemned the incident and demanded an immediate halt to further deforestation in the area.
