LOKD College hosts 11th Omeo Kumar Das Memorial Lecture

Tezpur: Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das College at Dhekiajuli organised the 11th Omeo Kumar Das Memorial Lecture on Wednesday in collaboration with the Bhaxa Sahitya Sanskriti Adhyan Mancha of the college (Forum for Language, Literature and Culture Studies).

Prof. Umesh Deka, former Head of the Department of Modern Indian Languages, Gauhati University took part as keynote speaker in the programme held at the Bezbarua Conference. In his lecture, Prof. Deka elaborately discussed the place of Naba Kanta Barua and Keshab Mahanta in modern Assamese literature. He observed that the emptiness, despair and romantic love of modern urban life constitute the core themes of Naba Kanta Barua’s  writings, while the compassion of lyric poet Keshab Mahanta for the oppressed masses finds vivid expression in his poems and songs.

Dr. Jogendra Saikia, President of the College Governing Body chaired the session while the meeting was anchored by Dr. Arindam Kumar Deka, Coordinator of the Bhaxa Sahitya Sanskriti Adhyan Mancha. Principal of the college, Dr. Sukdev Adhikari, delivered the inaugural address and Dr. Hari Prasad Barua, Coordinator of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, introduced the resource person to the gathering.

On the occasion, Prof Umesh Deka launched a book titled ‘Chah Bagicha Jhumur Aru Bihu’ authored by Dr Sukdev Adhikari. The other edited volume titled ‘Cross Road of Knowledge’ edited by Dr. Hemanta Nath, Purabi Kalita and Mayuri Bora under the initiative of the Education Department was unveiled by Dr Jogendra Saikia.

          Among others the programme was also graced by Co district SP Bhargab Mani Das, Principal of Rangapara College Dr. Ranjan Kalita, retired teacher Bidhu Bhushan Roy, retired professor Dhruba Hazarika, Vice-President of the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association Mohan Tanti, noted social figure of Dhekiajuli Dhruba Bhusan Mahanta, Bogiram Boro and several others. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Dalima Kakati, noted author and faculty of Assamese department of the college .
