Lower Subansiri Achieves 100% Tap Water Coverage Under Jal Jeevan Mission

Itanagar, June 4: Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Subansiri district has achieved 100 per cent Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) coverage under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), providing piped drinking water to all 15,740 rural households in the district, officials said on June 3.

The milestone was reviewed during a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Oli Perme at Ziro, where officials assessed the progress of water supply infrastructure and discussed measures to sustain the achievement in the long term.

According to officials, the district’s complete tap water coverage spans two development blocks, 109 gram panchayats, 200 villages and 271 habitations, ensuring access to safe and reliable drinking water for rural residents across the district.

To strengthen monitoring and maintenance of water supply schemes, authorities have constituted a 10-member District Technical Unit (DTU) comprising engineers, consultants, laboratory assistants and operators. The unit will be responsible for providing technical support and overseeing the functioning of water supply systems.

The review meeting also focused on the protection and sustainability of water sources. Officials emphasised the importance of adopting proactive measures to address challenges posed by seasonal variations and climate change. The Source Finding Committee has been tasked with identifying, developing and safeguarding dependable water sources to ensure uninterrupted supply and meet future demand.

Plans were also discussed to extend water supply services to newly emerged habitations and further strengthen Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs) to enhance community participation in water management.

In addition, officials stressed the need to improve revenue collection systems and implement the Jal Seva Ankalan framework to boost service quality, accountability and the long-term sustainability of drinking water schemes.

Authorities described the achievement as a major milestone in the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Arunachal Pradesh, reflecting the district administration’s commitment to ensuring safe drinking water access for every rural household.
