LR Sailo has been honoured with the Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika National Award 2025 by Sarhad, Pune, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to public communication, social harmony, and efforts to strengthen the bond between Mizoram, the Northeast, and the rest of India.
Instituted by Sarhad, a Pune-based organisation working since 1987 to integrate India’s border regions with the national mainstream, the award celebrates individuals who embody Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s ideals of peace, unity, and cultural communication.
Widely regarded as a “Messenger of Peace,” Sailo played a crucial role during Mizoram’s years of unrest, using media and public relations as instruments of dialogue and reconciliation between the government and the people. His communication-driven approach helped foster understanding and stability in the state.
The award ceremony, held in Guwahati on November 3 as part of Dr Hazarika’s birth centenary celebrations, was graced by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia. Other recipients of the honour included Laishram Mema Devi, Yeshe Dorje Thongchi, Prof David R Syiemlieh, Dr Surjya Kanta Hazarika, and Rajni Basumatary.
