Lurinjyoti Vows to “Uproot BJP” in 2026, Launches Campaign from Sadiya

Tinsukia: Declaring a fierce electoral battle against the ruling BJP, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Wednesday said the saffron party would face a decisive defeat in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. He was addressing thousands of supporters at the party’s fifth central foundation day celebrations in Chapakhowa, Sadiya, in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.

“In 2026, the BJP will be uprooted completely,” Gogoi said, accusing the ruling party of creating a “crisis of values and ideals” in Assamese society. He asserted that the AJP would launch a renewed political struggle to defend Assam’s land, identity, culture and democratic future, and counter what he described as “communal politics.” Gogoi also claimed that the ideals of Su-Ka-Pha, Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhavadeva had been undermined under the BJP.

AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan announced that the party had formally begun its 2026 campaign from Sadiya, stressing the need for opposition unity and common candidates to prevent division of votes. He alleged that repeated political “betrayals” in the name of nationalism and regionalism had damaged public trust, saying the AJP aimed to restore confidence in regional politics.

Party leaders highlighted the AJP’s rapid rise, noting that it secured around seven lakh votes within 100 days of formation, signalling public appetite for a regional alternative.

The foundation day programme included flag hoisting, floral tributes and an open meeting attended by over 5,000 supporters, where leaders criticised the BJP’s “double-engine” government and pledged to continue a broader movement for Assamese self-respect and indigenous rights.
