Majority of Pangkang Jorkong Households Back Siang Upper Multipurpose Project Feasibility Studies

Itanagar, March 3: Nearly all households in Pangkang Jorkong village have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Arunachal Pradesh government, clearing the way for pre-feasibility studies on the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, a strategic hydropower initiative aimed at strengthening national energy security.

Out of 86 households in the village, 79 endorsed the agreement, which was signed by Siang Deputy Commissioner Tayi Taggu for the government and Tamyo Mingki on behalf of the community. The MoU specifically pertains to activities related to the Pre-Feasibility Report, with further consultations promised for affected families should the studies indicate the project’s viability.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Rural Development Minister Ojing Tasing, Siang Upper Multipurpose Project Development Committee Chairman Tamiyo Taga, Joint Secretary for Hydropower Hage Lailang, and Chief Engineer Karom Perme. Speaking at the event, Tasing highlighted the community’s support, saying, “The growing participation and support from local communities is a strong testament to the trust and confidence in the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project.”

Officials clarified that a detailed rehabilitation package and special development schemes for families affected by the project would be rolled out if feasibility studies yield positive results. Community representatives expressed support for the pre-feasibility activities while emphasising the need for continued dialogue to safeguard local interests.

Villagers welcomed the project for its potential benefits, including enhanced power generation, improved flood control, and broader regional development, marking a rare instance of unified local backing in a region where hydropower projects often spark debate.
